| The
Beginnings...
The Veranda is the
vision of founding owner Robert Whiteside. He purchased 68 acres
in the Piney Woods of East Texas in 1992 that was originally a deer
lease with no existing buildings or improvements. That same year he purchased a 1914 Sears kit house
from a property east of Mount Vernon and had it moved onto
the property then dug a 4.5 acre pond just 50 feet from the back
door of the house. During the years that followed he added a second floor to the house for three guest
rooms and living quarters, built a swimming pool, pool house and gazebo
and in 1998 opened the B&B
and restaurant. Robert was a world-renowned
jewelry and objects of art designer in Dallas for over 20 years and
moved his residence and shop to the property in 1995. Since his death in 2006
the jewelry business has closed but The Veranda B&B and Restaurant
continues on in the tradition he established.
